Justification of interest in SL: Do I have to justify?
Having some experience with academical philosophy (though by no means a Philosopher as such), I am used to thinking in terms of the question about general "interest": The main praise and critisism given and taken amongst philosophers goes along the following simple axis: Interesting or Not Interesting.
And of course, it is not good to think about issues, partake in activities, or like things that are Not Interesting. In fact, it's considered embarrassing, stupid and even shameful, and it is certainly socially stigmatising and not PC (or whatever is the opposite of PC at any given time, as we all know, sometimes not PC is PC).
Now I'm aware that most of the debate about the justification of SL is about it's economical viability, whether it will grow or wither, the
bigger issue about virtual words in general, the particular issue about how many residents there really are etc. (I may blog about that later, though there is certainly no lack of writing about these topics).
But my personal concerns are more on the line of: Is it worthwhile for me to be here? Should I spend time and (implicitly or explicitly) money on SL? Is it okay to have an interest? Is it, in other words, Interesting? (and if yes, can I defend that position for
my RL friends)?
Well, for the time being I've decided to stick with a simple yet elegant solution, the Gordian solution so to speak (or maybe the
Charlie Brown solution: No problem is so big that you can't run from it): I'll cut my debate short by saying that for now it is interesting
because it interests me.
It is a personal experience, and I am sure
that in worst case it is Interesting to have experienced it and thought about it.
And I won't tell my RL friends. That's how socially insecure I am, in RL that is. at: Haman (140, 87, 44)
