Yes, the blogHUD does use XMLRPC. If you'd prefer using a differnt blogging app, then feel free to try one.
What do you mean? You want to post to a different type of blog? Does it support the MetaWeblog API?

Drupal supports MetaWeblog and a few others, and Mephisto is 'sort-of' working/still in development. Theoretically Typo should work too -- you could add them to your pro features perhaps.
Since it supports the MetaWeblog API I'll be the guinea pig and test it out!
