I've been looking around, over the last few days, for inspiration for my next scripting project. Been playing with a few new ideas of late, such as builder tools for window tinting that offer features which aren't already out there (after talking to some builders) and some testing with the llMoveToTarget functions in combination with sensor input to see what's possible and what the problems are. I also scripted my own cycling vendor, you know the type... forward and back buttons and a main display... pay the vendor to buy the item you see.
Finally, I went back through the sales records of items I have previously created and offer for sale and revisited what is probably the simplest, yet most popular, item that I offer in my store... a Cycling Picture Frame. This item is as basic as basic gets for a scripted object, you place photo's or textures (same thing!) inside the frame and it rotates through them at 10 second intervals. The picture frame sells for less than 500 lindens and I have sold more of them than anything else in my store or on SL Exchange by a long shot!
There's a lesson here, perhaps? Simplicity is the key to success? The simplest items are in the most demand? Perhaps peoples photo memories inside SL are that close to them that they find the item, although simple, more attractive? What do you think?
Anyway, I went back to my basic, ugly picture frame and rebuilt it with a much better looking frame and a number of enhancements to the script: configurable cycle delay, whisper notifications of picture names, hold / release of current picture. Nothing to stretch the scripting brain cells here, but, I guess some kind of guilt must of set in considering the item is so old and basic, yet people are spending money on it! After I had updated SL Exchange and my vendors with the new package and some new photo's, I created a folder with the new package and a thank you note and proceeded to inventory drop it on all of the picture frames previous customers.
If you're interested in the new picture frame, take a look at the vendor in my store @ http://slurl.com/secondlife/Selby/230/102/52 ... I also posted this blog entry from my store, so it should be showing the location on the blog map.
I'm still looking for another project, though, something to stretch the old scripting brain muscles, any ideas?
