today we picked up the current issue of wired with the brief, not so comprehensive, guide to second life. although i was fairly disappointed with the presentation of what wired actually covered, i must admit that there was still quite a bit mentioned that
oh. and the map, which i was excited about and had planned on scanning and making my desktop, it sort of blows.
anyways... checking out some of the places mentioned by wired and currently at virtual hallucinations. the build appears to be a uc davis sponsered effort which serves as a 'schizophrenia education building'.
from the notecard found at the tp landing point:
"Some people find the virtual hallucinations experience disturbing, particularly the voices. If you find it bothersome, just walk to the end of the clinic and click the "Stop Voices" button.
If you have a history of mental illness, particularly a psychotic disorder, you should not tour this facility.
The virtual hallucinations environment has been experienced without difficulty by a few people with well-controlled schizophrenia. They found it interesting and educational. However, I don't know if experiencing a version of someone else's hallucinations
So please be careful. Remember that you can quit at any time."
a second notecard provides some basic information about the build in general and about schizophrenia. it states that the build is actually based upon the experiences of two individuals with schizophrenia, and that the two gave feedback on early developmen
i'm pretty intrigued by what i'm about to check out.
-a little while later-
the build is excellent! not sure how well it worked at helping me really understand what someone might really experience, but at least gave me a vague idea. and although i didn't personally find it all too disturbing, i can understand the warning!
if you haven't checked it out, you should!
(hey - where's the darn spell check on this thing ?)
